PHAAM – Breastfeeding-friendly pharmacy is an initiative born in Italy that is beginning to take root in France and Germany. Geneva could become a pilot city.

What is it about?

Pharmacy is a citizen-oriented facility that can play an important role in disseminating information on infant feeding and can support breastfeeding mothers from the first days of life of the newborn, following WHO and UNICEF guidelines.

Importance of breastfeeding

The World Health Organization WHO states that breastmilk is the specific food of the human species and recommends “exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life; and the introduction, at the age of six months, of healthy and nutritionally satisfactory complementary (solid) foods, in parallel with continued breastfeeding until two years of age and above,” and of course according to parental preference.

What commitment for PHAAM?

The pharmacy interested in the “Breastfeeding Friendly” certification should match the services it offers with the Initiative’s criteria, which aim to promote, support and protect breastfeeding. It should be emphasized that this initiative is also an opportunity to change all the daily practices that hinder and/or limit the successful initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.

In France, 5 pharmacies are currently certified

In France, 5 pharmacies are currently certified, others are in the process of being certified.

  1. Pharmacie de la Fontaine in Yenne (Savoie 73) since December 2015,
  2. Pharmacie de l’Alliance in Grenoble (38) since January 2017,
  3. Pharmacie Marceau in Courbevoie (92) since October 2017.
  4. Pharmacie de la Mer d’Iroise à Ploumoger (29) depuis 2019.

Information in German: Stillfreundliche Apotheke

Die Apotheke ist eine Einrichtung, die dem Bürger zur Verfügung steht, um den allgemeinen Gesundheitszustand zu verbessern und effektiv zu einer gesunden Kinderernährung beizutragen, indem sie ab der Geburt des Kindes die Mütter beim Stillen unterstützt.

Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) vertritt die Meinung, dass Muttermilch das am besten geeignete Nahrungsmittel für das Neugeborene ist und rät daher Müttern, ihre Kinder bis zum sechsten Lebensmonat ausschliesslich zu stillen und auch nach der Einführung von anderen Lebensmitteln bis zum zweiten Lebensjahr oder je nach Wunsch der Eltern mit dem Stillen fortzufahren.

Mütter und Väter haben grossen Informationsbedarf wenn es ums Stillen geht. Die Apotheke kann diese Rolle als Berater und Unterstützer des Stillens wahrnehmen, denn Stillen ist eine Langzeit-Investition in die Gesundheit von Kind und Frau.

Werbekampagnen für Baby-Milch und andere Muttermilchersatzprodukte können die Mütter beim Stillen einschränken oder sie gar davon abhalten, wie Studien von WHO und UNICEF aufzeigen. Daher haben die WHO und UNICEF den Internationalen Kodex für die Vermarktung von Muttermilchersatzprodukten (1981) und daran anschliessende Resolutionen des Weltgesundheitsrats verabschiedet, mit dem Ziel eine geeignete Kinderernährung zu sichern und unpassendes Marketing zu kontrollieren.

Zu diesem Zweck muss sich die stillfreundliche Apotheke verpflichten:

  • Zusätzlich zu den bestehenden Gesetzen auch den Internationalen Kodex für die Vermarktung von Muttermilchersatzprodukten (1981) und daran anschliessende Resolutionen anzuerkennen.
  • Sich einer regelmas̈sigen externen Kontrolle zu unterziehen, um das Einhalten des Internationalen Kodex und die Kriterien der Initiative zu garantieren.
